Champagne,The Rhone & Sancerre, France 10 days
Many years ago, probably more than we and most of our clients care to remember, Cliff Richard sang “We’re all going on a summer holiday” and that’s what we are arranging this year but this is for grown-ups only! Good food, nice hotels, good sightseeing and above all, good wine and plenty of it! We’ve tried to make this trip as leisurely as possible and it covers a lot of ground over three prestigious areas but at a gentle pace.
First day. We’ll sail from Portsmouth to Caen and a cabin will be provided. Arriving quite early on the Tuesday we make our way eastwards through the Paris suburbs and thence to Epernay. We’ll pause for a while and make our way to Castellane for a champagne tasting. Now we drive out to the outskirts where we’ll have dinner and overnight adjacent to the vines.
On Wednesday we have a tasting at Canard Duchene and afterwards settle back for the ride to Tain l’Hermitage south of Lyon in the Rhone Valley. The small town is famous for wine and chocolate. We arrive late afternoon and check in to our hotel , the re-furbished 4* Grand Pavillon which has a swimming pool for your relaxation after a hard day’s wine exploration . We stay here for four nights.
Thursday – we’ll visit Marc Sorrell and have time for sightseeing in Tain before travelling to Paul Jaboulet Aîné for our tasting. In the afternoon we have train ride along the gorges from Tournon to St Jean a Colombier le Vieux. Then it’s relaxing time at the hotel before dinner.
On Friday we’ll start to explore the Côte-Rôtie with a visit to Domaine Gilles Barge at Ampuis. Afterwards we’ll be in Vienne where we have lunch at the Hotel de la Poste in the old town. Afternoon some local sightseeing in the old Roman Town we drive to Condrieu for a visit to Caves Georges Vernay. Return to the hotel for a free evening.
On Saturday we’ll be looking at the area around Tain and our first visit of the day will be a “train ride” through the vines. In the afternoon we visit the Cave de Tain and after this, just for a change, we’ll stop at the Chocolate maker. Then it’s back to the hotel for our final dinner here.
We leave Tain on Sunday morning and head northwards past St Etienne, Moulins and Nevers to the eastern Loire region. At Pouilly we’ll have a tasting before we reach Sancerre and the Hotel Panoramic where we stay for two nights. Dinner at the hotel.
On Monday we travel to Verdigny for a tasting at Domaine de la Perrière. Afterwards we will have some free time in Sancerre before visiting Caves Joseph Mellot. Return to the hotel for dinner.
We leave on Tuesday and our journey northwards will give us time for sightseeing in Orleans before we continue to the coast. We’ll have dinner in Ouistreham before catching the overnight ferry to England. Arriving at Portsmouth next morning, the coach then returns to the original pick up points.
