France Atlantique 10 days
This visit is intended to display the Atlantic Coast of France and some of its wine growing regions. We’ll be planning this trip some time well ahead of its actual realisation so it is impossible to indicate which vineyards we will be visiting. In the fullness of time we will name them on our website but you can rest assured that they will be up to our usual standards. If there is a more comprehensive tour than this then we have yet to come across it!
On Saturday we’ll sail from Portsmouth to St Malo on the 2015 sailing which is a most leisurely cruise.
Arriving on Sunday at 0800 we spend the day travelling south through Brittany, Loire Atlantique, the Vendée and thus to Aquitaine where we check in to the 4* Hotel Mercure at Libourne, capital of the wine region. The River Dordogne flows opposite the hotel. We stay here for five nights.
We are going to have an easy day on Monday with a short drive to St Emilion. A morning tasting will be followed by lunch in the pretty village and afterwards you can sightsee before a final tasting in the afternoon. Back to Libourne and a free evening.
On Tuesday we’ll head in the opposite direction and across Bordeaux to the Medoc. A morning tasting will be followed by lunch in Pauillac and on our way back to Libourne we’ll drop into Bordeaux for some sightseeing. Free evening in Libourne.
We’ll be travelling eastwards on Wednesday, this time into the Dordogne and a visit to the riverside town of Bergerac. We’ll have a tasting in the morning and then there is time for sightseeing before we cross the river to Chateau Monbazillac where we have a tour of the chateau and will taste the wines before returning to Libourne for a free evening.
On Thursday we head southwards to St Croix du Mont for a tasting overlooking the valley. Then it’s on to the Sauternes & Graves region before returning to Libourne. Dinner this evening.
We leave the hotel on Friday and travel northwards to Cognac where we have a tasting of the brandy with Hennessy. Continuing in the afternoon we stop for a tasting at Vix and then continue to Fontenay le Comte to stay for two nights at the Hotel Le Rabelais. Dinner at the hotel.
There’s a break from the wine tasting on Saturday as we’ll drive westwards to the charming port and resort of La Rochelle. In the afternoon we return to Fontenay and will stop in the centre. There’s a wine shop here if you are experiencing any cravings from missing a daily tasting! Finally it is back to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
On Sunday we have a tasting in the Muscadet region as we drive northwards to the coast and our final dinner and overnight at Ouistreham.
Monday morning sees us on the 0830 sailing to England which reaches Portsmouth at 1315. The coach then returns to the original pickup points.
