France Atlantique 10 days
This visit is intended to display the Atlantic Coast of France and some of its wine growing regions. We’ll be planning this trip some time well ahead of its actual realisation so it is impossible to indicate which vineyards we will be visiting. In the fullness of time we will name them on our website but you can rest assured that they will be up to our usual standards. If there is a more comprehensive tour than this then we have yet to come across it!
On Saturday we’ll sail from Portsmouth to St Malo on the 2015 sailing which is a most leisurely cruise.
Arriving on Sunday at 0800 we spend the day travelling south through Brittany, Loire Atlantique, the Vendée and thus to Aquitaine where we check in to the 4* Hotel Mercure at Libourne, capital of the wine region. The River Dordogne flows opposite the hotel. We stay here for five nights.
We are going to have an easy day on Monday with a short drive to St Emilion. A morning tasting at Chateau Coutet will be followed by lunch at the vineyard then free time in the pretty village and afterwards you can sightsee before a final tasting in the afternoon. Back to Libourne and a free evening.
On Tuesday we’ll head into Bordeaux for some sightseeing. In the afternoon we will visit the new Cite du Vin complex on the River Gironde. We then return to Libourne for dinner.
We’ll be travelling eastwards on Wednesday, this time into the Dordogne and a visit to the riverside town of Bergerac. We’ll have a tasting in the morning at Creysse at Chateau Tiregand and then there is time for sightseeing before we cross the river to Chateau Monbazillac where we have a tour of the chateau and will taste the wines before returning to Libourne. Dinner in Libourne.
On Thursday we head into the most prestigious wine region in the world, the Medoc. We have a morning tasting at Chateau Pichon Baron then travel into Pauillac for lunch by the riverside. In the after our tasting is at Chateau Pedeschaux. Back to Libourne for a free evening.
We leave the hotel on Friday and travel northwards to Cognac where we have a tasting of the brandy with Martell. Continuing in the afternoon we stop for a tasting at Vix with Mercier and then continue to Fontenay le Comte to stay for two nights at the Hotel Le Rabelais. Dinner at the hotel.
There’s a break from the wine tasting on Saturday as we’ll drive westwards to the charming port and resort of La Rochelle. In the afternoon we return to Fontenay and will stop in the centre. There’s a wine shop here if you are experiencing any cravings from missing a daily tasting! Finally it is back to the hotel for dinner and overnight.
On Sunday we have a tasting at Chateau du Coing followed by lunch in the Muscadet region . We drive northwards to the coast and our final stop will be in the centre of Caen before we continue to Ouistreham and the overnight ferry to England.
