Jazz in Normandy 5 days
Roger Marks’ Cornish Armada Band Immensely popular playing to full houses almost everywhere they go. A band packed out with personality and infectious bonhomie, nevertheless produces some very fine New Orleans jazz from its hugely experienced and talented musicians.
We’ll be based at the 4*Novotel just off the centre of Bayeux, the first city in Normandy to be liberated in 1944 and briefly the capital of France. Our excursions will give you a rare insight to the culture and history of the region and we’ve tried to strike a balance between the ancient and the modern so that there’s something for everyone in addition to their appreciation of jazz.
On the first day, Wednesday, we’ll drive to Plymouth where we catch the overnight sailing to Roscoff. The ship
sails at 2200 and this affords us a nice relaxing cruise to France. A 2-berth cabin is provided but if you’d prefer a
larger cabin they are available at a supplement.
On arrival in France at 0800 on Thursday we head along the coast past St Brieuc and Dinard then northwards via Mont St Michel and Avranches before continuing to the little town of Villedieu-les-Poëles, famous for its copper industry. We’ll stop for a little sightseeing and refreshment and then resume our journey to Bayeux. After checking in, there’s time for relaxation before dinner and afterwards the Band will play for your enjoyment.
On Friday we will drive north eastwards to Honfleur where we spend the morning in this charming port and resort. In the early afternoon we have a visit to an important Calvados maker. We’ll get back to the hotel in the late afternoon. After dinner, the Band will play for your pleasure.
On Saturday we park in the centre of Bayeux where we’ll stay for a while in this historic city where it is market day. In the afternoon we continue to the coast and Arromanches, setting for the famous Mulberry Harbour in WWII. We stop for refreshment and then drive along the coast road to the American Cemetery overlooking Omaha Beach before turning inland and thus back to the hotel for dinner and entertainment.
On Sunday we leave the hotel very early and drive to Ouistreham where we catch the 0830 ferry to England. During the crossing, the Band will play a session. We arrive at Portsmouth then drive back to the West.
The cost includes: travel by executive coach; ferry crossing with 2-berth cabin overnight; three nights 4* hotel accommodation with buffet breakfast, dinner each day with wine; entertainment by the Band; excursions as detailed. All rooms have private facilities and the hotel has a lift. Cabins have private facilities.
